Air Force One Shoes: Coming Out With Flying Colours
Nike's two strong contenders in the sports shoe business are the Air Jordan series and the Air Force One Shoes. Both have been grounded in experience and are created by the best people in the industry with the state of the art equipment and resources. This article concentrates on one of Nike's stalwarts, the Air Force One shoes.
A bit of history to begin with. The Air Force One shoes were first produced as early as 1981. Its design has been attributed to Bruce Kilgore. An important landmark reached with the Air Force One shoes was the usage of the Nike Air technology. The name of the shoes is an obvious reference to Air Force One, the plane that carries the president of the United States of America. Even though the Air Force One shoes have undergone little change, they remain one of Nike's most profitable ventures. The Air Force One shoes have been designed exclusively for the sport of basketball.

The Air Force One shoes undergo some variation or the other every year. As a consequence, each shoe name is followed and distinguished by it's year. For example, '1996 Air Force One Mid' denotes an installment of the Air Force One shoes series that was released in the year 1996. At present, there are almost nine hundred and twenty nine versions or installments of the Air Force One series. To commemorate 25 years of the shoe's existence, Nike has launched 1thology, a tribute and documentation of sorts for the various models under this series. It has various features that include a 'shoe of the month' too. For August 2007, the title goes to the 1982 Air Force One.
Some versions of the shoe have different editions in various cities. Such city editions have boosted popularity and sales significantly. Some of the popular city editions are the Paris edition, the Beijing edition, the Japan edition and the London edition. Each edition has various colour schemes and they come at various prices. Another line that the Air Force One shoes have taken is the retro line. This refers to imitating designs of earlier shoes, like those that were made in the 80s. The shoes remain huge hits largely due to the buyer's obsession with having them as collectibles. The retro style shoes were another feather in the cap for the Air Force One shoe series. The series became more popular when they started naming shoes after popular basketball players. These players can either be legends, or those who are doing well at the moment. The names considered were only those who played in the National Basketball Association, more popularly known as the NBA. Some players who had an Air Force One shoe named after them include Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Rasheed Wallace, Amare Stoudamire and many more. Needless to say, the players edition of the Air Force One shoes was also a runaway hit. The shoes are priced slightly high on the scale. They start at $80 and go higher. However, they are worth the money spent.
